My daughter was working on a project for college and her laptop shut off mid way. She lost all the work she did. Is there a way to get it back?

Ouch!  As you would expect no doubt - if she saved the presentation, then it is safe and sound in her account. 

But if not - then the work is lost I'm so sorry to say. 

I wish I had better news (or a magic wand)
